The Moroccan Octopus Smuggling Ring
One of the most interesting stories recently in the trade press has been that of the Moroccan Octopus Smuggling Ring!
Firstly we’d like to say that James Knight of Mayfair is not involved in this particular enterprise and that we obtain all our octopus and other seafood by more conventional, non-criminal means!
It is easy to see why octopus are such a desirable species these days as they are still seen as a delicacy and the rising price over the last few years has really taken it into the premium priced food range where it is typically more expensive than steak.
Octopus are interesting creatures and quite unique in terms of their genetic make up. There are many statistics about the number of arms or legs octopuses have but this list really makes interesting reading:
- One head
- one beak
- two eyes
- three hearts
- nine brains (with one of them centrally located)
- two legs
- six arms
In terms of catching octopuses, (the plural is not actually ‘octopi’ as many think) it’s usually done with bait inside a trap using cages, and this is similar but different from Cuttlefish which are generally caught using that old favourite of the lady cuttlefish as bait in a cage and then the male fish are attracted in by this enticement.
James Knight is proud to supply top quality, sustainable and legally caught Octopus to a variety of restaurants in London and the South, where it tends to show up more often on Portuguese, Spanish and Italian menus.
