Record Price Paid For Blue Fin Tuna Fish in Japan

Record Price Paid For Blue Fin Tuna Fish in Japan

One of the most interesting stories so far this year has been the record Blue Fin Tuna fish sale to a Sushi Bar Entrepreneur in Japan.

The self styled ‘Tuna King’ Kiyosi Kimura paid a huge premium for the first Blue Fin Tuna of the year to be taken from the sea.

The sale itself was for £2.5 million with a weight of 278 kilos. This is twice the price of the previous record, also bought by Mr Kimura.

A standard fish of this size would cost £47,000 so this represents a huge premium on the typical price just for the bragging rights of being first.

But the sale has not been without its controversy, as Blue Fin Tuna is registered as a key WWF endangered species and is protected in many parts of the globe.

Interestingly, as this has happened,  there has been a reappearance of Blue Fin Tuna fish in UK waters and there is still a fishing ban in place here.

We are however also aware that there is a growing amount of undeclared catches that, when added to the official total, show little change in overall annual catch volumes.

There is a growing movement to set up a protection zone for Tuna in UK waters and we’ll keep you posted on this subject as news happens.

In the 1950’s there were 50,000 high street fishmongers in the UK; now there are less than 1,000, mainly limited to wealthy areas. Many people have no access – or have to travel a long way - to buy genuinely fresh fish. We are going to reach a point where the only opportunity to eat fresh fish will be in a restaurant
