Here at James Knight sustainability and environmental considerations are right at the top of the list of the most important issues in our business.
In addition to exciting initiatives such as our innovative eTrikes to replace some of our vans, the subject of packaging is one that we are constantly working on to improve and reduce the impact of waste on the environment.
At James Knight we have a mantra of the 3Rs regarding waste.
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.
The first ‘R’ is to reduce the use of plastics in our business as much as we can.
The second ‘R’ is to reuse any materials, such as plastic, paper, polystyrene, in our business as much as we can. We want to minimise the amount of single use plastics wherever possible.
The third ‘R’ is to recycle, which we try to do at all times.
Our new packaging consists of a strong and sturdy plastic tray made from HDPE, the easiest and most valuable plastic to recycle. This is easy to clean and re use in your kitchen or to recycle alongside your plastic milk bottles.
The tray is top sealed using a clear nylon blend film, this is so strong you can stand on the tray without breaking the seal or indeed crushing the tray.
Currently, as with all food grade sealing films, this is not yet recyclable, but the packaging industry is working hard to resolve this. Overall 97% of the packaging will be recyclable.
The new packaging replaces the current format of waxed cartons, that are not recyclable due to food contamination and removes the inner plastic bag containing ice and the outer heavy duty plastic bag designed to prevent dripping.
The biggest issue that we still have – and the whole food industry has – is that plastic film is not yet recyclable.
Worldwide, companies are looking for increasingly innovative solutions to this key problem and among those being looked at very closely is one by a company that can turn ALL plastic into oil, which if possible on a large scale at a viable cost, could be a great solution to this big problem.
